(OTTAWA) The lawyer for six Canadian women and 13 children detained in camps in Syria says the federal government has agreed to help with their repatriation.
Me Lawrence Greenspon says a “mutually acceptable” deal was reached Thursday with Ottawa to repatriate 19 Canadian women and children.
The six women and 13 children are among many foreign nationals still in Syrian camps run by Kurdish forces, which had recaptured the area from fighters from the Islamic State group in the civil war-ravaged country.
Relatives of these women and children, but also of four men, argued in Federal Court that the government should organize their repatriation under the Canadian Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms.
Me Greenspon said Thursday that following the agreement reached with Ottawa, the legal request of the six women and 13 children is abandoned, but not that of the four men, who are not covered by the repatriation agreement.
The lawyer specifies that the details of the agreement recently concluded with the Canadian government remain confidential.
