Haiti has been plunged into a deep security crisis since mid-2021, when gangs took control of key infrastructure and sparked violent internecine wars that led to the collapse of most of the country’s medical and food systems.
Two weeks ago, Haitian Prime Minister-designate Ariel Henry agreed to resign once a transition council is formed, including to oversee an international military intervention led by Kenya.
Earlier this month, Canada flew most diplomats from its embassy in Port-au-Prince by helicopter to the neighboring Dominican Republic, to work remotely amid an escalating security situation. unstable.
Authorities said on March 14 that nearly 3,000 Canadians were officially registered in the country. Some have since left thanks to private services.
So far, Canada has flown 18 vulnerable Canadians out of the country, Minister Joly said.
