(Ottawa) The Ottawa police chief assures that his service is already preparing to manage a possible return of the “freedom convoy” to the federal capital next February.
Eric Stubbs sent a letter Monday to the Mayor and the Chairman of the Ottawa Police Services Board. He assures the municipal authorities that the liaison team of the Ottawa Police Service is already talking with the organizers of this demonstration.
James Bauder, co-founder of the group “Canada Unity” and one of the main organizers, announced on Facebook that he was planning a rally this winter in the name of “unity”.
Chief Stubbs said Ottawa Police will ensure precautions are in place to prevent a repeat of last winter’s events.
Beginning in late January, thousands of protesters blocked downtown streets for weeks to oppose health restrictions — and the Liberal government more generally.
These protests led to the closure of businesses and streets in the area, including part of Wellington Street in front of Parliament Hill. This section of street has since been closed to traffic.
Some merchants have urged the City to reopen Wellington Street, saying the closure has made it difficult for delivery trucks to move.
