(OTTAWA) Canada has imposed sanctions on seven Iranian judges, citing their role in gross and systematic human rights abuses in that country’s criminal justice system.
Global Affairs Canada says Iran’s Revolutionary Courts are notorious for handing down “death sentences and harsh prison terms after sham trials and based on evidence gathered under torture.”
This is the twelfth round of sanctions imposed by Canada against the Iranian regime since last October, following widespread protests calling on Tehran to respect human rights, including women’s rights, and freedom in that country.
The sanctions prohibit any dealings with listed individuals, freezing any assets they may hold in Canada.
Individuals listed in response to gross and systematic human rights violations are also inadmissible to Canada under federal immigration law.
Canada has imposed sanctions so far on a total of 163 Iranians and 192 entities.
“More than six months ago, the Iranian people demanded change. He made an appeal that was heard around the world and asked the Iranian regime to respect his fundamental rights and freedom, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement on Monday.
“Yet the regime has still not reacted; on the contrary, it multiplies executions, repression and intimidation. »
