Ottawa | Rideau Canal skating rink closes just four days after opening

(Ottawa) Ottawa’s Rideau Canal closed its doors to skating Wednesday evening at 10 p.m., four days after the first section of the rink opened for the season.

The National Capital Commission (NCC) indicated on its website that the closure was temporary and would last until further notice.

The canal will be closed to preserve the ice and prevent damage that could be caused to the ice by rain and above-freezing temperatures expected in the coming days.

Many Ottawa residents were relieved when the rink was partially opened Sunday, after it remained closed last winter for the first time in its history.

But skaters said earlier this week that the ice was in poor condition, and the NCC warned on its website that the snow could hide cracks, irregularities, rough edges or holes.

The NCC posted an animated GIF on social media of Margot Robbie crying in the film barbie to express disappointment over the closure on social media, adding that it planned to reopen the canal as soon as weather and safety conditions permitted.
