Ottawa freezes threshold for reportable mergers and invests in construction

(Ottawa) The federal government is freezing the threshold at which the Competition Bureau must be notified of a merger.

Ottawa also announced Tuesday $123 million in funding for eight homebuilders that the federal government says are driving innovation and will help build more than 5,000 affordable homes.

The announcements were made Tuesday morning during Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s weekly economic update alongside other federal ministers.

Competition law requires that mergers above a certain value be reported in advance to the Competition Bureau, so that the Bureau can determine whether the transaction could prevent or lessen competition in Canada.

Ottawa says the amount generally increases with gross domestic product – but will remain frozen at 93 million, the threshold set since 2021.

Funding for homebuilders is allocated through the Affordable Housing Innovation Fund, a program that funds rent-to-own programs and other innovative projects.
