Ottawa creates special task force to manage passport crisis

The federal government has created a special task force to help it tackle the significant delays in processing immigration applications and passport applications that have left Canadians frustrated.

In a statement announcing the new task force, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the federal government knows the delays are unacceptable and will continue to do everything in its power to improve service delivery efficiently.

Trudeau said the new task force will help the government better respond to the changing needs of Canadians and continue to provide them with the quality services they need and deserve.

Ten members of his cabinet will sit on the new committee, which will review service delivery and identify gaps and areas for improvement.

The committee is expected to make recommendations, with short and long-term solutions to reduce wait times, eliminate the backlog of applications waiting to be processed and improve the overall quality of services offered.

The task force will also look at external issues, such as labor shortages that contribute to travel delays both at home and abroad.
