Ottawa arson: Man unrelated to ‘freedom convoy’ charged

A 21-year-old man was arrested for his involvement in an attempted arson attack on a residential building in Ottawa in February as the city grappled with protests by truckers.

On February 6, two individuals captured by surveillance cameras were trying to set fire to the entrance hall of a building on Lisgar Street, but a passerby managed to quickly reach the flames.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS), which confirmed the arrest of Connor Russell McDonald on Monday, mentions that another suspect is still wanted in connection with the same case.

The police ruled out any connection between the suspect and the “freedom convoy” demonstrators, despite rumors at the time suggesting the opposite, due to the context of tension and confusion which reigned there.

Charges of arson causing damage and endangering human life, mischief to property and possession of incendiary material have been filed against the individual who will appear on April 21, the OPS said.
