Ottawa appoints a special adviser on the fight against Islamophobia

A few days before the sixth anniversary of the massacre at the Great Mosque of Quebec, the fight against Islamophobia has just gained momentum in Canada, with the appointment of Canada’s very first special representative for this purpose.

Thursday morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of Amira Elghawaby in this function. She will act as a special advisor to the federal government in its fight against Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial discrimination and religious intolerance. She will work as an expert, particularly during the development of inclusive policies, legislative proposals, programs and regulations.

Ms. Elghawaby, journalist and human rights activist, will also act as a spokesperson on several forums to convey a message promoting “respect for equity, inclusion and diversity, in addition to highlighting the vast contributions that Muslim people make to the national fabric of our country,” it said in a statement.
