Ottawa agrees with Google to compensate the media

After months of negotiations, the federal government has finally reached an agreement with Google on the regulatory framework that will establish royalties for Canadian media, confirmed a source from the Duty.

The Online News Act, also known as C-18, will come into force in less than three weeks, on December 19.

Ottawa wanted to extract around $172 million per year from Google, compared to around $62 million from Facebook, in order to finance journalism in the country.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has already blocked the sharing of journalistic content on its platforms in order to avoid the provisions of this law.

Google threatened to do the same if the federal government did not modify its draft regulations.

Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge must confirm the agreement early this afternoon in Ottawa.

More details will follow.
