As a result, 17 individuals and three entities will be banned from entering Canada or doing business with most Canadian companies for committing or enabling human rights violations against women, or perpetuating disinformation.

The list includes Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s longtime foreign minister. Also included is Saeed Mortazavi, the prosecutor who ordered the torture of Zahra Kazemi, a photojournalist who died in custody in Tehran in 2003.

Ten years earlier, Mr.me Kazemi had obtained Canadian citizenship and settled in Quebec.

She had been arrested a few weeks before the announcement of her death while taking photographs of a demonstration which took place in front of a prison in the Iranian capital.

Later Thursday, the Government of Canada will share more details on the series of sanctions announced last Friday, which seek to ban high-ranking members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps from entering Canada for life.
