Oscar Short Lists | Quebec and Canadian films in the race





Quebec and Canada have carved out a good place for themselves in the pre-selection of the Oscars. The Canadian Documentary Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song is one of the films selected in the preselection, just like fire of loveproduced in part in Montreal, and Nuisance Bearfilmed in Manitoba. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its shortlists for the upcoming Oscars in ten categories on Wednesday, including documentary, international films, original soundtrack, and sound and visual effects. Voting will open in mid-January to determine the nominees for each category.

Several of the major productions of the year stand out in the preselection. All Quiet on the Western Front is cited in five categories, Avatar: the Way of Water is in contention four times, whileElvis finds himself nominated twice.

Canada and Quebec do not stand out in the international category, but in particular make their place in the pre-selected documentaries.

Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Songdirected by Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine, chronicles the life of the songwriter and poet, focusing on the impact of his best-known song.

Also in the category of best documentary is the work of Sara Dosa fire of love, produced by Montrealer Ina Fichman and on which several Quebecers have worked. Short films that stand out

The Flying Sailor (The flying sailor), directed for the National Film Board of Canada by Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, is among the 15 works shortlisted for the Oscars in the category of best animated short. The film, which has already won eight awards, will also be shown at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.
