Oscar audiences still on the rise but far from their heyday

From the confirmed success of Oppenheimer to the musical performances of barbiethe Oscars recorded increased audiences for the third year in a row, with nearly 20 million viewers, still far from the heyday of this annual cinema ceremony.

According to the first audience figures published Monday by the American channel ABC, 19.5 million households were in front of their screens on Sunday evening for the unmissable glamorous evening of all Hollywood.

That’s almost double the COVID-19 era’s 10.4 million viewers, but far behind the roughly 40 million a decade ago. In recent years, Oscar audiences have been losing ground in the face of new competition from streaming platforms and social networks.

Without much surprise, OppenheimerChristopher Nolan’s atomic bomb film, walked away from the 96th Academy Awards with seven awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy.

For its part, the baroque UFO Poor creatures came away with four statuettes, including one for Emma Stone, crowned best actress for the second time in her career.

Among the highlights of the evening, Ryan Gosling’s inevitable pink costume to sing the famous I’m Just Ken from the movie barbie or, more unexpectedly, the presentation of the best costume prize by wrestler and actor John Cena (almost) naked and full of muscles.

Pop superstar Billie Eilish also marked the evening by becoming, at 22, the youngest artist to win two Oscars, this time thanks to another title from the soundtrack of barbie, What Was I Made For?.

But this evening was not to everyone’s taste. Master of ceremonies Jimmy Kimmel was happy to read a live message from Donald Trump in which he described the presenter as “below average”.

The latter responded to the probable Republican candidate for the November presidential election: “isn’t it time to go to prison? “.
