The French women’s basketball team is starting to write its record. European Champions in 2001 and 2009, Olympic vice-champions at the London Olympics (2012) bronze medalist in Tokyo (2020), “the Robbers” have started the qualifying phases for Euro 2023 scheduled in Israel and Slovenia.
Mid-November, it was the first outing of the French team now led by Jean-Aimé Toupane, the new coach. Bronze medalists at the Tokyo Olympics and European vice-champions this year, the French women are favorites in their group (B). A defeat against Ukraine (90-71) and a victory against Lithuania (83-56), the Blue are second in their group. The first team from each of the ten groups, as well as the four best runners-up, will directly uncheck their ticket for the competition.
An icaunaise on the floor
Wing Ornella Bankolé is participating in this European campaign. Born in Auxerre, she discovered basketball at the age of 10 at USC Monéteau and everything happened quite quickly. Detection, hope pole, young French team. She signed her first professional contract in Calais in 2016, then Montpellier in 2017 to play the Euroleague. Unfortunately for her, these seasons will be marred by big injuries (cruciate ligaments). Selected for the French team, she hopes to embody this new generation of player and to register in the long term. With the ambition to be on the court for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
