Orange tax turns blue

During the Radio-Canada leaders’ debate, host Patrice Roy questioned Québec solidaire (QS) co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois (GND) about his tax for more polluting vehicles, a Dodge Grand Caravan, for example, being imposed a surcharge of $7,000.

It was enough for the outgoing Prime Minister, François Legault, to accuse GND of living “in wonderland” with his plan to reduce GHGs by 55% by 2030, to which GND replied by accusing François Legault to “misinform” Quebecers when he criticizes his proposals and urges him to stop “taking out the Halloween decorations” to scare Quebecers.

But some ten days after the campaign during which François Legault has continued to ridicule the “orange tax” of QS, we learn that the Ministry of Transport is considering implementing a tax on more polluting vehicles, such as SUVs.

One of two things, either the Legault government had planned to ridicule GND during the election campaign to take up the idea of taxing more polluting vehicles on its own after its election, or it will coat its blue tax with a trim that will make it look different from the orange tax.

Personally, I’d rather opt for the second scenario, in which it’s easy to change a few words to turn the original idea into a new idea…especially for seasoned politicians like Pierre Fitzgibbon and François Legault.
