OQTF, tariff shield, minimum wage… We checked three statements by Emmanuel Macron during the program “L’Evènement”

Inflation, pensions, work, opposition, immigration… Emmanuel Macron was interviewed for more than an hour on Wednesday October 26 on France 2. The True from False cell verified several of his assertions.

Forced removals: “When I look at the last few years, before the Covid, we have gone from 13 000 to 14 000 and even at 19 000. We have clearly improved, it was the Covid that put us on hold”

The figures put forward by the Head of State are correct. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there was indeed an increase in forced returns until 2019, then a sharp drop at the time of the Covid. This is explained in particular by the borders which have been closed, there have also been fewer commercial flights. The pandemic has clearly complicated returns, says a Senate report. However, contrary to what Emmanuel Macron says, this is not the only explanation. Before Covid, OQTF execution rates were already low, around 15%. The Senate report speaks “structural obstacles”, including a lack of cooperation from some countries.

Tariff shield: “Where there should have been a 100% increase on electricity and gas, it will be 15%”

This is true for gas and false for electricity, according to an INSEE study published in September. Without the tariff shield, the increase in regulated tariffs between April 2021 and April 2022 would have been 105% for gas. On the other hand, it is less for electricity since without the price freeze, the bill would have increased by 37%.

According to INSEE, the tariff shield has clearly contained the surge in prices for a year. En the absence of this measure, inflation between the second quarters of 2021 and 2022 would have been 3.1 points higher, notes the Institute of Statistics.

From next January 1, the system will evolve. Regulated gas and electricity tariffs will increase by 15%.

Minimum wage: “The minimum wage this year has increased by more than 8%”

It’s true, the minimum wage has increased by almost 8% after experiencing four increases in the last twelve months. Minimum wage increased from 1 250 euros net at 1 330 euros. These are automatic adjustments provided for by law due to inflation. The minimum wage is automatically increased during the year by the amount of inflation (calculated for the 20% of households with the lowest incomes) if this exceeds 2% compared to the last increase.
