A modification that provoked strong reactions. The upcoming authorization to wear the burkini – this swimsuit which covers the entire body, hair included – in the swimming pools of Grenoble is the subject of a legal action filed urgently by the opposition to the municipal council, Tuesday, May 17. Objective: to obtain the suspension of the deliberation voted Monday in the municipal council before the summer opening of the basins, according to former right-wing mayor and opposition leader Alain Carignon.
The municipal council of Grenoble, led by the environmentalist mayor Eric Piolle, validated Monday by a small majority a modification of the internal rules of the swimming pools resulting in the authorization of the port of the burkini, but also the wearing of anti-UV swimsuits for all and the possibility of swimming topless.
The new regulation “calls into question living together, it pushes back the cause of women and it is an opening to political Islamism that we reject”estimated Alain Carignon. The resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, for his part described as“unacceptable community provocation” authorization to wear the burkini. “I have instructed the prefect to refer to ‘secularism’ the deliberation allowing the wearing of the ‘burkini’ and, if necessary, to request its withdrawal”, he added. The prefectoral referral falls within the framework of the control of the legality of the acts of the territorial collectivities.
Mr. Piolle, support of Mr. Melenchon, plays the unacceptable community provocation, contrary to our values. I instructed the prefect to refer the deliberation allowing the wearing of the “Burkini” to “secularism” and, if necessary, to request its withdrawal.

The prefect of Isère had already indicated on Sunday evening, before the deliberation of the municipal council, that he would seize the administrative court of Grenoble to block the measure, on the instruction of Gérald Darmanin. To do this, he should call on a provision introduced by the law on separatism passed in August 2021, which concerns acts relating to “seriously undermining the principle of secularism and neutrality of the public service”.
