Opinion – My dose of pessimism

If Xavier Dolan, as a celebrity, cannot give a politically correct opinion on the climate crisis without being condemned to public loathing, I, as an ordinary citizen, can.

François Legault, if he tells you that our salvation, in the face of the climate crisis, goes through the electrification of transport, don’t believe it, he wants to make you swallow a snake. A gasoline-powered Hummer replaced by an electric Hummer may be charming, but it will not weigh heavily in the table of measures to be taken to fight against GHGs. Legault, in my opinion, seeks to retain his electoral clientele addicted to gas-guzzling vehicles. Nothing less. This populist Premier knows only too well what the car fleet in his province is made up of today.

There is no possible salvation for mankind, as long as nearly 35% of GHG production will inevitably come from China, India and the United States combined, while Quebecers, although models unequaled by the mindless consumer, produce only 2%. But GHGs, it should be remembered, know no borders.

Politicians subjugated to big business, which have ignored, in recent decades, the ever more threatening imprecations of the IPCC, have eaten for too long from the hands of the powerful of this world and shared the same bed as the fossil fuel industry. On this point, Canada has been and remains exemplary. In my opinion, the policies are without a realistic solution commensurate with the mega-challenge posed by the climate crisis. As a tangible result, they are condemned to put out the fires, both literally and figuratively, leaving the less fortunate populations to fend for themselves. Welcome, growing social inequalities.

[…] At this rate, our children and future generations will find themselves as on The Raft of the Medusa floods, droughts, forest fires, melting glaciers and permafrost, heat waves, massive population displacements for drinking water, to name a few. […]
