Because there is no real political will to resolve the situation, either in Ottawa or in Quebec.
From January to March, there were 7,000 trips to Roxham Road. In 2020, for the same period, it was 2992 passages through Roxham, compared to 27 in British Columbia and 16 in Manitoba! In 2018, for the first three months of the year, there were more than 7300 passages by this path.
Governments have been aware of this situation for years and do nothing to correct it.
The problem is certainly not the individuals who try to improve their lot, it is human, but the system and the status quo of governments. System imposed by Ottawa and tolerated by Quebec.
While the Minister of Immigration of Quebec, Jean Boulet, and the Premier of Quebec, François Legault, demanded the closure of Roxham Road, the CAQ government signed, last April, a 10-year contract valued at 50 million dollars to house asylum seekers passing through Roxham Road.
Last year, the Trudeau government signed a similar five-year contract to also house asylum seekers arriving via Roxham Road.
What is striking with the signing of these contracts is that governments obviously intend to keep this path “open” for a long time yet…
Ottawa clearly has no intention of intervening, and the current Quebec government refuses to assume its responsibilities and show creativity. No political will at the end of the 20 or at the end of the 50…
Roxham Road is a road, it is not THE border…
Calling for the closure of Roxham Road does not mean being against refugees, quite the contrary. It is to militate for the respect of the right, the rules and the Law.
