To discover and understand the diversity and complexity of a territory and its citizens, there is a unique network that intelligently and appropriately presents the complexity of our world: the network of museums and interpretation centers in Quebec.
Of course, there are major known and recognized flagship sites presenting exhibitions and mediations taking stock of routes, works or themes (unfortunately, there is not yet a national science and technology museum in Quebec ). But there are also museums all over Quebec that explore reality and offer us opportunities for wonder and knowledge, whether in matters of history, science or creations. You cannot visit and understand Quebec without visiting these places. Thus, one can discover the richness of the St. Lawrence thanks to Exploramer (Sainte-Anne-des-Monts), share the culture of various social groups at the Museum of World Cultures, in Nicolet, or marvel at the works exhibited at the Portneuf International Flax Biennial.
If cities are to be aware of the importance of such places both for economic reasons and for cultural and social reasons, the Government of Quebec should adopt a multi-year plan to develop, not protect, this network.
The museum network experienced a significant period of growth in the late 1980s and early 1990s; it is time to take a new step and give museums the means to fully play their educational and cultural roles. Regional and thematic needs exist, museums have demonstrated their skills and the seriousness of their actions, numerous reports have outlined courses of action… it is up to the government to combine its heritage support program with a development program museology throughout the territory, on an analysis of themes and respecting the diversity of cultural and scientific projects. There can only be one approach and a real action plan should be put in place in consultation with the community.
As a citizen and visitor, I would like to thank these places for their actions and I invite the Ministry of Culture to establish a development plan based on a shared vision of cultural dissemination centered on the one hand on knowledge to be shared and, on the other hand, on plural audiences. It is no longer a question of supporting, but of developing. Quebec needs this network.
