(San Antonio) Canadian Corey Conners birdied on four of his last five holes on Friday, en route to a round of 64, eight under par, to take him to the top of the championship standings. Valero Texas Open after a weather-delayed first round on Thursday that was completed on Friday.
Winner of this tournament in 2019, Conners had forged a two-stroke lead over Patrick Rodgers before the second round began on Friday morning.
Three golfers tied for third within three strokes of Conners, including Chris Kirk, who completed his round with three straight birdies. The other two were Hayden Buckley and Peter Malnati.
Canadian Nick Taylor was part of a group of 13 golfers who fell five strokes behind the leader after 18 holes.
The first course on Thursday was delayed by more than three hours due to fog. Before the round was halted due to darkness, veterans Padraig Harrington and Matt Kuchar had posted 68 cards, four under par, and were leading the standings with MJ Daffue and Roberto Diaz.
Taylor Montgomery and Michael Kim completed their first round on Friday and joined this quartet, four strokes behind the Canadiens.
Conners hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since winning that tournament in 2019.
