The inhabitants of Pyrénées-Atlantiques will not be able to count on Jean Lassalle to defend their department. The deputy of the 4th district of the department since 2002 has indeed announced that he would not be a candidate in the next legislative elections. It was during a press briefing that the one who filmed his abstention in the second round of the 2022 presidential election announced the news.
“After a presidential election, which was already decided in advance, I have the feeling that the country is falling apart before our eyes. Rural areas like my Aspe valley no longer interest anyone, like the RN134 which is completely neglected by the State”he regretted in particular during his speech in front of the journalists before expressing his “very strong emotion” when he announced that he was putting his career as an MP on hold: “I have a lot of gratitude for the Basques and Béarnais who have supported me through these two decades. It is with tears in my eyes that I make the decision not to represent myself. I will miss the constituency very much”.
A member of the clan to take up the torch?
But the inhabitants of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, if they want a member of the Lassalle clan to take over, can still maintain hope. Indeed, Jean Lassalle assured to have spoken with his brother so that this one succeeds him. Or at least, present his candidacy in the next few days. “I spoke with my brother Julien Lassalle: I asked him if he wanted to become a deputy. He will make his decision in the coming days. In any case, there will be a candidate from my ‘Resist’ party within of the 4th district of Pyrénées-Atlantiques”assured the candidate for the last presidential election.
If he did not mention the reasons which prevented him from running in the next legislative elections, Jean Lassalle all the same pointed to a major health concern which forced him to undergo a major medical intervention. “I will undergo delicate open-heart surgery in the next few days”he explained to make it clear, in part, what prevented him from running for a new term.
