Ontario’s first French-speaking lieutenant governor takes office

Édith Dumont will officially become the first French-speaking lieutenant-governor of Ontario this morning. She will be sworn in at Queen’s Park, to represent King Charles III at the provincial level.

Escorted by horsemen, Ms. Dumont arrived at the Legislative Assembly aboard a horse-drawn carriage. She will have to take an oath to the king and deliver a speech. Ontario Premier Doug Ford will also make a speech.

An outdoor military ceremony will follow, during which the new Lieutenant Governor will inspect an honor guard made up of members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

After her installation, Édith Dumont will attend a ceremony at the Royal Chapel of Massey College, the sacred place of the Anishinaabek King, as part of a first official activity.

Lieutenant governors are appointed by the Governor General of Canada. They are the ones who grant royal assent to bills adopted by the Legislative Assembly.

Further details will follow.
