(Montreal) A subsidiary of Volkswagen will establish an electric vehicle battery production plant in St. Thomas, Ontario.
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada, François-Philippe Champagne, took advantage of his presence at the IMPULSION event, the International Summit for Electric and Intelligent Transport (TEI) which is held until Wednesday at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, to make the announcement.
“Earlier today, Volkswagen announced that it had chosen St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada to establish its first-ever overseas battery production facility. This is an important vote of confidence in Canada and Ontario and in our joint efforts to make the country and the province global leaders in the electric vehicle supply chain,” said Minister Champagne and Ontario Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli in a joint statement.
According to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, Canada and Ontario have attracted more than $17 billion in investment by automakers and suppliers of electric vehicle batteries and battery components since 2020.
