(Toronto) Ontario’s New Democratic Party (NDP) will confirm on February 4 that Toronto-area MPP Marit Stiles will become leader of the party, a month ahead of schedule, following a meeting of the NDP Provincial Council.
Mme Stiles will also inherit the position of Leader of the Official Opposition in the Legislative Assembly.
She was the only candidate for the leadership of the provincial NDP. Last month, she dismissed claims that a coronation as party leader meant there was a lack of enthusiasm to assume leadership.
Marit Stiles notes that after being elected leader, she will focus on ensuring the defeat of Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford in the 2026 general election.
Mme Stiles is the NDP’s Education Critic. She has represented the Davenport constituency since 2018 after serving as a school trustee.
Longtime New Democrat Peter Tabuns has served as interim leader since former leader Andrea Horwath announced his resignation the night of the June provincial election. Since then, M.me Horwath was elected Mayor of Hamilton.
