United Transit Union Local 1587 issued a statement on Sunday saying it was unable to come to an agreement with Metrolinx, which notably manages public transit in the Greater Toronto Area, on a new contract for work.

The strike, which will affect bus drivers, station customer service attendants and other employees, will begin at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

Metrolinx had previously announced that in the event of a strike there would be no bus service on Monday morning, but stressed that the subway would remain open.

According to the union, negotiations with Metrolinx began in April and its members have worked without a collective agreement since 1er June.

Metrolinx’s offer for a new contract was rejected by 81% of union members.

The GO Transit strike comes three days after thousands of Ontario education workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, walked off the job indefinitely.
