Peel Police say they were called to a facility near Credit Valley Hospital at 7:40 a.m. Friday and were alerted that a person with multiple guns had barricaded themselves.

At that time, police said the person “represented a significant risk to public safety” and to the safety of first responders, due to their proximity to the hospital.

Negotiators were dispatched to the scene to discuss with the individual and evacuate the people present in the building. The man was finally taken into custody at the start of the day on Saturday, just after midnight.

Police say the 66-year-old Calgary man has been charged with multiple offences, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of forcible confinement and reckless use of a firearm.

Authorities maintain that this is an isolated incident and that there is no longer any risk to public safety.
