Ontario | Federal by-election in the riding of Erin O’Toole

(Durham, Ontario) A federal by-election takes place this Monday in the riding of Durham, Ontario, to fill the seat vacated by former leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), Erin O’Toole.

Mr. O’Toole served as Leader of the Official Opposition from August 2020 to February 2022 and left his seat last spring. He was elected as an MP for the first time in 2012.

The riding of Durham, which includes part of the southern Ontario city of Oshawa, has been held by the Conservatives since 2004.

Jamil Jivani, a lawyer and commentator, is running for the Conservatives in hopes of succeeding Mr. O’Toole.

The Liberal Party of Canada (PLC) has chosen Robert Rock, municipal councilor for the township of Scugog, north of Oshawa. Mr. Rock initially sought the Conservative nomination, but says he decided to run for the Liberals because the Conservative party no longer respected his values.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate is Chris Borgia, president of the Durham Region Labor Council.
