Ontario ends state of emergency

Ontario is following the lead of the federal government and is also ending the state of emergency today. Premier Doug Ford made the announcement in a statement late Wednesday.

The Prime Minister specified that the emergency measures available to the police under the state of emergency would be maintained, without however specifying which ones and for how long.

A state of emergency was declared on February 11 due to convoys of truckers that notably immobilized the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor and downtown Ottawa. The measure allowed police forces to impose fines of up to $100,000 on people blocking the transportation of goods and people.

Under the Civil Protection and Emergency Management Act, the state of emergency would have ended no later than February 25, unless extended. The provincial government must table a report on the emergency in the Legislative Assembly within 120 days of the end of the emergency.
