Ontario | Accident leaves four dead, including two grandparents and their grandchild

(Whitby) Four people died, including two grandparents and their infant grandchild, in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby when a suspicious vehicle traveling the wrong way was pursued by police, Ontario’s police watchdog said.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the person in the suspect vehicle also died.

SIU spokesperson Monica Hudon said Durham Region police were notified of a theft at a Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) branch in Clarington on Monday around 7 p.m. 50 p.m., and found a van of “interest”.

Mme Hudon says officers followed the van down numerous streets and at one point it ended up on Highway 401 going the wrong way.

She says there was a collision involving at least six vehicles a short time later.

The SIU is currently investigating the circumstances of the accident and what happened, including the police pursuit.
