Only 34% of girls in France are confident in the future of the world, reveals a study by Capital Filles, in partnership with Radio France, on the occasion of International Girls’ Day, Friday October 11. “A figure which illustrates a climate of generalized pessimism”, according to the association, which connects corporate sponsors and girls from neighborhoods and the countryside.
This first confidence barometer, produced in partnership with the Occurrence Institute (Ifop group), gives a voice to more than 400 young women. It underlines the crucial role for the girls interviewed of having support, whether it comes from parents, friends, the environment, that young girls have the opportunity to have access to cultural activities, or that they benefit of a climate of safety in their neighborhood.
78% of girls who feel supported are confident about their own future, while only 55% of unsupported girls remain hopeful about their future. Girls who live in the suburbs are over-represented (44%) among unsupported girls. These disparities underline the urgent need to act to build a protective and inclusive environment, particularly for young adults and young women in the suburbs, who often feel abandoned.
Another subject that concerns girls is gender inequalities. Less than one in two girls (48%) believe they have the same rights and the same opportunities as boys their age. “This barometer is the occasion for a cry of alarm”explains Elizabeth Tchoungui, president of the Capital Filles association. “It is a call to hear the voices of those who are too often invisible and absent from public debates. It highlights an urgent and fundamental need: to offer real support to young women in our neighborhoods and our countryside.”
