A one-year suspended prison sentence was requested, Thursday, November 30, against former President Nicolas Sarkozy at the appeal trial on the excessive spending of his presidential campaign lost in 2012. At first instance, in September 2021, the former leader of the State had been sentenced to one year of imprisonment for having exceeded the legal ceiling of expenses authorized for this campaign.

In this case, known as “Bygmalion”, named after the company which organized the campaign meetings of the right-wing candidate, 14 people, including Nicolas Sarkozy, were sentenced at first instance to sentences of up to three and a half years in prison. prison, part of which was suspended. Three of them did not appeal, so their conviction is final.

Unlike his co-defendants, the former head of state is not accused of the system of false invoices designed to hide the explosion in his campaign’s spending (nearly 43 million euros, while the ceiling legal was 22.5 million). But at the end of the first trial, he was sentenced to a sentence higher than what the prosecution had requested, which had requested a year in prison, including six months suspended.
