On February 6, 2023, tens of thousands of people died in an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale in Syria and southern Turkey. For the victims, the situation remains chaotic.
In southern Turkey, the Kapicam cemetery is made up of tens of thousands of graves. It is here that the bodies of the victims of the terrible earthquake that occurred on February 6, 2023, in the Turkish Republic and Syria are buried. With a scale of 7.8, the earthquake caused heavy damage. Destroyed houses, gutted buildings, a landscape of desolation. A year later, the panorama remains almost unchanged.
No rehousing solution
“There has been no progress. There is only demolition”, deplores Fatih Akkoc, a disaster victim waiting to be rehoused. Some live in specially designed containers. “People are unhappy. They can’t find food because they don’t have money”laments Ali Yildirim. “This social housing is not enough”, says Zahide Seker, an earthquake survivor who lost her husband and children. She calls in particular for a condemnation of the real estate developers, implicated in this natural disaster.
