To mark the anniversary of the death of a young Iranian woman who sparked global protests a year ago, Canada announced new sanctions targeting six senior officials of the Tehran regime, who are now barred from entering the country. country or to have assets there.
The new sanctions echo Canada’s allies and include members of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, an unelected body that created the so-called morality police, responsible for enforcing hijab rules.
Saturday will mark the first anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, in police custody after being arrested for not wearing her hijab properly.
Canada notably sanctions Abdol Hossein Khosrow Panah, who took over the group in January and strengthened surveillance of women in Iran.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly says she has observed an acceleration in repression against Iranian women over the past year.
“Today’s sanctions reflect our unwavering commitment to supporting the Iranian people, particularly women and girls, as they continue to courageously defend their rights,” Ms. Joly wrote in a press release.
This is the 14th round of sanctions Canada has imposed on Iran in the past 11 months. These sanctions concern 31 entities and 129 people.
