Climate change is causing torrential rains around the world. Pakistan is currently experiencing the worst flooding in its history, according to its Prime Minister.
A third of Pakistan is under water. This is unheard of. For the first time, Tuesday August 30, Muktyar Bibi joins what remains of his house in Shikarpur: a ruin, carried away by the rain and the river. His last hope is to find some of his modest belongings among the debris, a few days after the disaster. “I had to save my children. I ran with them, but where could I go? My house collapsed, now I live on the road with my children”deplores Muktyar Bibi.
The roads are then the only refuges still dry in an almost completely flooded region. This is where hundreds of disaster victims have gathered. Some walked for several days in the water to reach a makeshift camp. The Indus, the country’s main river, now invades cities and countryside for miles. Under the force of the waves, 3,400 kilometers of road were destroyed, and 157 bridges washed away.
