A person died during the night from Saturday to Sunday while trying to escape a fire that broke out in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, franceinfo learned on Sunday July 28 from the Paris prosecutor’s office and a source close to the case.

According to a source close to the case, the victim jumped from the second floor of the six-story building. Despite the intervention of the firefighters, the person did not survive. Seven people were also affected by the smoke and were taken to hospital without any life-threatening condition, the source said.

The origin of the fire is not yet known and an investigation to determine the causes of death is underway, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. According to a source close to the case, the first evidence gathered indicates that a scooter was present on the ground floor of the building, in the common areas, and that it caught fire, causing smoke to be released into the stairwell.

At the same time, the Paris prosecutor’s office added that another body was discovered in the building during security inspections carried out by the firefighters. This death is unrelated to the fire. A separate investigation from the first has therefore also been opened to again look for the causes of death.
