One person died in the sinking of a migrant boat on the night of Thursday December 14 to Friday December 15 off the coast of Grand Fort Philippe (North), France Bleu Nord learned from the Northern prefecture. Another person was hospitalized in an absolute emergency.
In a press release, the prefecture explains that the “Cross Gris-Nez” was informed in the middle of the night “that a boat of migrants [était] in difficulty less than 8 kilometers from the coast off Grand Fort, with around sixty people on board. According to the prefecture, a “State-chartered rescue vessel” arrived “in the area less than 30 minutes later”.
The rescuers then realized that “one of the boat’s tubes is deflated and people are in the water.” To help them, the “Cross Gris-Nez engages several other means of rescue.”
In total, 66 shipwrecked people were rescued, “including two unconscious people”. “An unconscious victim, with a life-threatening condition, was evacuated by helicopter to Calais hospital; the second unconscious person unfortunately could not be resuscitated”says the prefecture.
