Arrested in the Paris region by the anti-terrorism services, the two men had planned to take action during the holidays. They targeted Christmas markets, crowded shopping streets and universities. Knife attacks to randomly murder as many passers-by as possible. “Their project resembles the threat hanging over the national territory”, summarizes Laurent Nunez, National Coordinator of Intelligence and the Fight against Terrorism.

The 23-year-old suspects met recently via the internet. Both frequented jihadist sites, claiming to be part of the Islamic State group. One of them has already been implicated in a planned attack in 2016. While a minor, he was sentenced to 4 years in prison, including 18 months suspended. Released in 2019, the man had since been monitored by the intelligence services. Since the start of the year, four attacks have been foiled in France by the anti-terrorist services.
