(Ottawa) Everything indicates that there will finally be no “freedom convoy” on the streets of Winnipeg next month.
The group Canada Unity, which is one of the organizers of last year’s protest in Ottawa, announced on Facebook that it was canceling plans for another rally at the end of February.
Canada Unity founder James Bauder initially planned to return to Ottawa for a new event, but announced on December 25 that the event would eventually take place from February 17 to 21 in the Manitoba capital.
However, less than a week later, Mr. Bauder published a long message on Saturday on Facebook in which he explains that the rally will simply not take place, in particular because of security risks and personal attacks directed towards him.
Mr. Bauder is one of dozens of people who were arrested and charged with various wrongdoings related to failing to follow police directives and court orders during the February 2022 protest.
The first version of the “freedom convoy” had paralyzed downtown Ottawa and various border crossings with the United States for several weeks. The federal government had to resort to Emergency Measures Act for the first time since its adoption in order to put an end to the demonstration.
