Cannes must not lose its leading position as a “city-cinema”. Mayor David Lisnard assures that his city in Europe “has the largest number of rooms and seats (4,742 seats) compared to the number of inhabitants (75,000 inhabitants) and has managed to maintain a solid attendance“.
However, the city had 30 cinemas 30 years ago compared to only three today and soon to be four with the return to center stage of the old STAR cinema located at 98 rue d’Antibes in the very center. An old cinema created in 1913 then closed in January 2016. Work is beginning and should last between a year and a half and two years for an opening in 2024.
The new project plans to retain four rooms and 539 seats over 1,000 m2 for a projected cost of work estimated at 10 million euros. There will be spaces to host debates and meetings around cinema “spaces that will be used during the International Film Festival (FIF)“. The place will also be coupled with a large commercial sign whose name has not yet been disclosed. Internationally renowned architects have been called upon.
