The fortified castle

Druyes is part of the first generation of Philippian castles (or castles-courtyards) from the time of King Philippe Auguste. It is built on a square plan of 52.3 meters per side. The angles are defended by four round towers

Built in 12th century by the Counts of Neversit was one of the habitual residences of Peter II of Courtenay (cousin of the King of France Philippe Auguste), Count of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre by his marriage in 1184 with Agnès de Nevers, then later Emperor of Constantinople, then of his daughter Mathilde – called Mahaut – Countess of Nevers, Auxerre and Thunder.

It is an imposing building which is one of the most important specimens of military architecture from the Romanesque period in Burgundy.

Charlie O’ Plumes

Charlie O’Plumes is a craftsman and makes very original jewelry made from feathers and leather from its circular economy network in his workshop Druyes-les-belles-fontaines.

John Bertin

John Bertin, born in Druyes on September 5, 1917 and died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on December 21, 1975, was a French engineer in the aeronautics and transport sector. He filed more than 800 invention patents but he is best known for the invention of the aerotrain.

From 1963 to 1974, he devoted himself to the design and testing of the aerotrain, a project initially supported by the public authorities but which was finally abandoned by the state on July 17, 1974.

HAS Saint-Martin Farm in Druyes-les-belles-fontaines, Virginie Graillot offers you the cheeses from his goats and sheep.

On the farm, she offers in her shop and for direct sale her farm droppings, from the driest to the freshest.

But that’s not all ! If Virginie sells her own production at Druyes Les Belles Fontaines, she also offers that of other local producers. In particular flours, ciders and apple juices, wines and honeys.

You can also find it in the markets of Auxerre and Toucy.

Captain Coignet

Captain Jean-Roch Coignet born in 1776 in Druyes-les-belles-fontaines is a faithful soldier of Napoleon.

Captain Coignet enlisted in the Army at the age of twenty-three and first served in the Italian Campaign as a simple soldier. He entered the Emperor’s Guard in 1803. He was in Austerlitz, Jena and Friedland, then became a Corporal in 1807. He was named Sergeant in 1809 on his return from Spain. He then campaigned in Austria and, in 1812, he became a Lieutenant. He took part with this rank in the Russian campaign and retired, then he was appointed Captain in 1813 and moved to the General Staff.
After the first abdication, he retired to Auxerre and joined Napoleon when he passed through his town in 1815. He fought at Fleurus and Waterloo.

He is the first to receive the Legion of Honor and he will have fought in all the Napoleonic wars without having a single injury!

He was sent back to his homes on October 31, 1815 where he lived the difficult life of half-pay, watched by the police because of his military past and his loyalty to the memory of Napoleon. He then wrote his memoirs and ended his life in Auxerre where he is buried.
