A 17-hectare power plant has been built on an artificial lake in Vaucluse, with some 47,000 photovoltaic panels which give the impression of floating on water.

A floating photovoltaic power plant, one of the largest in Europe. A gesture from the municipality for the Earth rather appreciated by the residents. “It’s a place that is still a little isolated that not everyone sees”, explains a resident. The town of Piolenc (Vaucluse) and Louis Driey, its mayor, had a somewhat bizarre idea around ten years ago. Cover the body of water with solar panels to create a floating photovoltaic power plant.

The project made it possible to assemble 47,000 floating solar panels. It has many advantages such as the efficiency of these solar panels which is higher than what happens on earth. This project, despite the administrative blockages encountered during its development, quickly won over local residents to make this town in Vaucluse one of the first positive energy towns. This technology is starting to catch on in France while numerous projects have already been developed around the world.
