Surrounded by hooded and armed men, Haiti’s new strongman, nicknamed “Barbecue”, one of the country’s main criminal leaders, wants to overthrow the government. He demands the resignation of the Haitian Prime Minister and threatens the country with civil war and genocide. Since the weekend of March 2 and 3, the gangs have united to challenge the authorities. The international airport was attacked. Prisons were stormed and notorious criminals were released.
The UN sounds the alarm
In the streets, bodies litter the ground. The State, almost non-existent, seems totally overwhelmed. The Prime Minister, who had gone to Kenya for help, was unable to return to his country. The UN is sounding the alarm and requesting the deployment of the multinational security support mission in Haiti. In two months, nearly 1,200 people have been killed in the country due to gang violence.
