One million refugees fled Ukraine in one week, says UN

(GENEVA) One million refugees have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries since the start of the Russian invasion a week ago, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said on Thursday.

Posted at 10:03 p.m.

“In just seven days, we have witnessed the exodus of one million refugees from Ukraine to neighboring countries,” Grandi tweeted.

“For millions more inside Ukraine, it is time for the guns to be silenced so that humanitarian assistance can arrive and save lives,” he pleaded.

Mr. Grandi planned to travel over the next few days to Romania, Moldova and Poland, three countries hosting large numbers of Ukrainian refugees on their soil.

The UN General Assembly passed an overwhelming majority on Wednesday that “demands that Russia immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine”.

On the ground, the Russian forces continued their progress with in particular the capture of Kherson, a large city in the south of the country.
