The situation is still tense between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the West Bank. Israeli forces wounded a Palestinian after shelling a house on Friday (May 13th) in the Jenin refugee camp in the north of the occupied territory, according to the official Palestinian agency Wafa. The Palestinian boy was shot in the abdomen in the refugee camp and taken to hospital, Wafa said citing local sources.

This young man has been identified as Daoud Al-Zubeidi, brother of a former leader of an armed group in Jenin who escaped from an Israeli prison in September 2021 before being captured. He was injured in clashes with Israeli forces that erupted after Israeli soldiers surrounded a house in the camp, according to Wafa, who did not say who owned the accommodation. According to the agency, the house was then targeted with guided missiles, causing a fire. It was then that violent clashes broke out.

Asked by AFP about these clashes, the army did not comment immediately. She had earlier said in a statement that her forces were carrying out “counter-terrorism operations” in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by the Jewish state. The Israeli army has stepped up raids in recent weeks in the Jenin refugee camp, a stronghold of the Palestinian armed factions from which the perpetrators of recent attacks in Israel originated.

This is where Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, of the pan-Arab channel Al-Jazeera, was killed on Wednesday while covering one of these operations. Her funeral takes place Friday in Jerusalem, where this 51-year-old Christian Palestinian grew up, after a mass at 2 p.m. Paris time. Israeli police expect “thousands of participants”. It therefore deploys additional forces and closes roads in anticipation of the funeral.
