One in ten young adults vapes every day, reveals a Statistics Canada survey released Monday.
One in ten young adults aged 20 to 24 used e-cigarettes daily and one in five (20%) used them in the 30 days preceding the survey. This is an increase from 15% in 2019, 13% in 2020 and 17% in 2021.
On the other hand, cigarette use decreased, from 10% in 2021 to 8% in 2022. The practice of vaping and smoking is more widespread among men than among women.
Among young people aged 15 to 19, almost 14% had vaped in the month preceding the survey, with around 7% vaping every day. This rate is stable compared to the last four years.
Vaping is also proving to be more popular than smoking among young people. Around a third of 15 to 19 year olds have tried vaping at least once in their life, while this figure rises to 48% for 20 to 24 year olds. In comparison, 10% of youth and 27% of young adults have tried smoking cigarettes.
Vaping, however, has fewer fans among older people. Among those aged 25 and over, only 15% have tried vaping, but 52% have tried smoking cigarettes.
End of perfumes on October 31
To protect young people from the harmful effects of vaping, the sale of vaping products that have “a flavor or aroma other than that of tobacco” will be prohibited as of October 31 in Quebec, the Minister of Health, Christian, announced in August. Dube.
The capacity of vaping tanks and capsules will also be limited to 2 ml and the maximum volume of e-liquid refill containers will be limited to 30 ml. Quebec will also limit the nicotine concentration of vaping products to 20 milligrams per milliliter.
The Press reported in March that teenagers could easily obtain e-cigarettes at convenience stores or from relatives, although they are prohibited for minors. These products can become highly addictive in just a few weeks.
