One Hundred Years of Solitude is coming to Netflix

The first scene of A hundred years of solitude finally comes to life in its adaptation on Netflix, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary on Wednesday of the death of its author and Nobel Prize winner for literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez.


“In the mythical town of Macondo, the Buendia family is confronted with an impossible love, their past and a curse that condemns them. Series A hundred years of solitudebased on the masterpiece by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, will arrive on Netflix this year,” indicates the platform of streaming on the X network.

She does not specify a date for the release of the series, in this brief trailer, which coincides with the tenth anniversary of the death of the Colombian writer in his residence in Mexico.

The television adaptation was announced in 2019, but it is only today that the first images are known.

“In this first glimpse, the voice of Aureliano Babilonia deciphering the mythical diary of Melquiades takes us to Macondo with the image of Colonel Aureliano Buendia in front of the firing squad, where he had to remember that distant afternoon when his father would take him to meet the ice cream,” explains Netflix.

Published on May 30, 1967, A hundred years of solitude tells in 20 chapters the story of the village of Macondo (inspired by the author’s native village in northern Colombia) and the Buendia family over seven generations, mixing fantasy and reality.

Initially printed in 8,000 copies, it has now sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 46 languages.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, born in the city of Aracataca in 1927 and who began his career as a journalist in the Caribbean city of Cartagena, is the icon of Latin American magical realism, a movement that revolutionized Spanish-language literature in the 20th century.e century.

The Nobel Prize winner was always opposed to his masterpiece being adapted for the screen, because he did not see how the book could be condensed for television or cinema.

The series received the approval of the author’s family and was produced by the Colombian Laura Mora, winner of the Golden Shell in San Sebastian in 2022, and the Argentinian Alex Garcia Lopez.

A hundred years of solitude represents one of the most ambitious audiovisual projects in the history of Latin America, made by the best artists and technicians from Colombia and other countries, filmed entirely in Spanish and in Colombia, and with the support of the family by Gabriel Garcia Marquez,” according to Netflix.
