Yemeni Houthis, Iran-backed Islamist rebels, have claimed responsibility for a drone attack on Tel Aviv, Israel, killing one person and injuring several others on the night of Thursday, July 18 to Friday, July 19. Israel’s Iron Dome was not activated.

A drone, clearly visible in the sky of Tel Aviv (Israel), on the night of Thursday 18 to Friday 19 July, exploded in one of the residential areas of the city. The huge explosion occurred at 3am, 600 metres from the American consulate. One man was killed instantly and several people were injured. The Houthis, close to Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack. Early on Friday morning, they added that Tel Aviv was their main target.

The famous Iron Dome, Israel’s defense system, was not activated. How can this failure be explained? The army cites human error and a malfunction, while the drone’s engine was found in an apartment. It is an Iranian-made device, improved to travel a long distance. Daniel Hagari, spokesman for the Israeli army, said that an investigation was underway to determine the origin of the malfunction. This is the first time that the Houthis, allied with the Islamist movement Hamas, have managed to strike the seaside city.
