On your screens: January puzzle

Health, at what price?

Making an appointment with your family doctor — or any other doctor — is a complicated thing in urban centers in Quebec. But imagine for a moment living in the region, far from a hospital: the obstacle course for access to care then becomes a real ordeal. As evidenced by the excellent — and nevertheless revolting — documentary produced by Karina Marceau for Radio-Canada, which plunges the public into the heart of the challenges facing the inhabitants of the Côte-Nord, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean and even of the Matapedia valley. They must leave their homes and loved ones behind and spend a lot of money on gas, accommodation and meals in order to receive vital treatments and obtain medical follow-ups from specialists. in Quebec, Sherbrooke or Rimouski, for example.

Second-rate patients? travels the roads of the province to show viewers realities that are little talked about and which arouse even more indignation over the shortcomings of the Quebec health system. Throughout the meetings, we become aware of the inadequacy of certain measures intended to compensate for the distance between patients and health establishments. This is what Éricka is experiencing, pregnant with twins, whose pregnancy is therefore considered at risk, and who regularly has to drive nearly 190 kilometers to consult. The problem ? According to the law, she is not entitled to any financial compensation, because her house is located less than 200 kilometers from the hospital… An aberration which nevertheless concerns many geographically isolated Quebecers.

Second-rate patients? also makes us think indirectly about the consequences of these problems on the development of regions and their aging population, but also about ethical questions. How inhumane is it that some sick people must today choose between letting themselves die at home or living uprooted to heal due to lack of health services near them?

Detectives in action

If the first season of True Detective, with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan, was a big success in 2014, the following ones generated less interest. But 10 years later, there is hope with season 4, made up of six episodes, which stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the main roles of investigators Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro.
