On the road to the Oscars | Manon Dumais’ predictions

Best film

Choice : Anatomy of a fall

Prediction: Oppenheimer

Between the Palme d’Or (Anatomy of a fall) and the Grand Prix in Cannes (The Zone of Interest), my heart is hesitant… Since I have to choose, I set my sights on the sober and brilliant legal drama by Justine Triet, whose conclusion left more than a few people speechless. If he is a worthy opponent for Oppenheimercertainly more spectacular, but too verbose and full of lengths, it is still Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama which has the chance of pulverizing its competitors.

Best achievement

Choice: Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest)

Prediction: Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer)

Once again, I’m hesitating between my two favorite films. Having been more dazzled by the scenario ofAnatomy of a fallwhere Justine Triet and Arthur Harari brilliantly cultivate ambiguity, which through its judicious ideas of staging, I opt for The Zone of Interest. Jonathan Glazer’s audacious direction and the powerful use of off-screen footage completely blew me away. But in the face of Oppenheimerthis drama taking place near the Auschwitz camp which still haunts me risks biting the dust.

Best actress

Choice: Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a fall)

Prediction: Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon)

What do the films of Justine Triet and Jonathan Glazer share? The colossal talent of Sandra Hüller! In Anatomy of a fall, she plays with many nuances a German novelist accused of the murder of her husband who must defend herself in French. However, she will have to bow to Lily Gladstone, whose undeniable talent is finally revealed in Killers of the Flower Moon. Thanks to her interior acting and her more than eloquent look, she could write a new page in the history of the Oscars.

Best actor

Choice: Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)

Prediction: Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer)

A fiery conductor, a charismatic civil rights activist, a professor as grumpy as he is endearing, a tormented scientist and a disillusioned novelist: whose luck? If they are all played brilliantly by actors whose reputation is well established, it is the role played by Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer which is necessary. Invested in his character in every fiber of his being, having fed himself an almond a day to resemble him, the Irish actor should add a first Oscar to his collection of awards.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Choice: Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple)

Prediction: Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers)

When the colorful Sofia sings Hell, No! in musical drama The Color Purple, Danielle Brooks seems to lend her powerful voice to all Afro-descendant women refusing to be walked on. Despite the desire to sing and dance felt in front of Brooks and his companions, the luminous presence and natural authority of Da’Vine Joy Randolph, facing the imposing veteran Paul Giamatti and the promising newcomer Dominic Sess in The Holdoversassure him of winning the bet.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Choice: Robert Downey Jr. Oppenheimer

Prediction: Robert Downey Jr., Oppenheimer

Unrecognizable in the role of Oppenheimer’s sworn enemy, Robert Downey Jr. accomplishes the feat of eclipsing Cillian Murphy at times. This shows the extent to which he would have left his formidable rivals far behind. And not just Ken (Ryan Gosling), who will have to console himself by singing along on Sunday evening, but even the great De Niro, like a fish to water with Scorsese. On his third selection, including one for the Best Actor award (Chaplin), the actor could finally win the coveted golden statuette.

Best International Film

Choice : The Zone of InterestJonathan Glazer

Prediction: The Zone of InterestJonathan Glazer

Alongside the excellent Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller (the one, the only one!) masterfully embodies a chilling queen of the home in The Zone of Interest. Despite the high quality of the other films in competition, that of Jonathan Glazer, which tells the peaceful daily life of the commander of the Auschwitz camp and his family, easily stands out from the crowd. LikeAnatomy of a fall, The Zone of Interest competes in five categories. As the galas are long and often exciting, let’s hope this adds some spice to the evening!

The 96e Oscar Night takes place on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. It will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. on the CTV network.
